Despite a popular misconception, cheap labor is not what drives most farmers to employ immigrants and legal, non-immigrants. Some 70% of the Salinas Valley’s annual harvest is collected by immigrants. Many farmers and agricultural business owners claim that number is even higher.

What does spur the hiring of immigrant and non-immigrant workers is that most local  residents in any agricultural area don’t want to physically work in the fields.
